Hedges Family Estate
Hedges Family Estate, founded in 1987, is a family-run winery rooted in old-world traditions with a strong French influence. Their commitment to sustainability extends beyond organic certification, using biodynamic methods and Demeter certification. Roaming chickens control pests, and fermentation occurs naturally without commercial yeast. The family is adapting to climate change with drought-resistant grape varieties and careful irrigation. Rejecting mainstream scoring systems, they focus on making wines that speak for themselves.
Sarah Hedges Goedhart, daughter of Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges, never planned to become a winemaker, despite growing up among the vineyards of Hedges Family Estate in Washington State’s Red Mountain AVA. Initially, she wanted to be a vet, finding winemaking too labour-intensive. However, after making wine in her flat with her now-husband, she became fascinated by fermentation. After training in Sonoma, she returned to Hedges in 2006 and now crafts wines that reflect family heritage, biodynamic principles, and a true sense of place.
